Dr. Richard Haugen is a certified medical anesthesiologist practicing in Edmonton since 1995. Dr. Haugen attended the University of Alberta where he earned his B.Sc. (Med) in 1987 and graduated as a medical Doctor (M.D.) in 1989, receiving the Douglas Leitch Medal in Pediatrics and the Moshier Memorial Gold Medal for (first in class) Medicine. After completing his anesthesia specialty training (FRCPC) at UBC Vancouver in 1994, he did additional subspecialty training in pediatric anesthesia at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne Australia in 1995.

Dr. Haugen is a Clinical Professor of Anesthesia at the University of Alberta and has practiced at the Stollery Children’s and University of Alberta hospital since 1995. From 2003-2005, he was Clinical Director of Operative Services at the University of Alberta Hospital. He has served his specialty as a member of both the written and oral exam board for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Locally, he has served as the Assistant Chair of Education for the Department of Anesthesia and has on three occasions been Clinical Teacher of the Year.

Dr. Haugen has extensive experience in ambulatory anesthesia, but also has had strong interests in transplantation anesthesia and palliative care.

Rick has been happily married to his lovely wife Betty since 1992 and has three wonderful children. He loves to cycle, ski and kayak.
