Oral Pathology
Oral pathology is a speciality involved with the diagnosis and study of the causes and effects of diseases affecting the mouth, jaws, and face. These diseases can involve the teeth, supporting bones, temporomandibular joints, gums, tongue and other hard and/or soft tissues.
Oral pathology takes into consideration your current and past medical history, medications, diet, hygiene and lifestyle risk factors, such as smoking, vaping, or alcohol use. A clinical oral mucosa and hard and soft tissue examination are used to diagnose and manage diseases and conditions affecting the mouth.
The following can be signs at the beginning of a pathological process or cancerous growth:
- Reddish patches (erythroplasia) or whitish patches (leukoplakia) in the mouth
- A mouth sore that fails to heal and bleeds easily
- A lump or thickening on the skin lining the inside of the mouth
- Chronic sore throat or hoarseness and/or difficulty in chewing or swallowing
These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, palate, and gum tissue around the teeth, tongue, face, and/or neck. If you, your doctor or dentist notices any abnormalities or changes, please book a consultation with Drs. Lung, Davis or Forrest.
