Dr. Ian Hopkins is a certified medical anaesthesiologist who currently practices in Edmonton, Alberta. Ian was born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. His early education was obtained at George Watsons Boys College in Edinburgh. From there he continued his education at the University of Glasgow from where he graduated in Medicine in 1962. Following stints of six months as a House Officer in Medicine and Surgery at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary he began his training in Anaesthesia at the same institution. After attaining the grade of Senior Registrar he decided to leave his homeland and come to Canada.
He arrived at Edmonton in January 1967 to a position at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and also a post as a Fellow in Internal Medicine and Coronary Care. Ian became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1967. Throughout his career, Ian has maintained a keen interest in both neurosurgical and out-patient anaesthesia. He has been instrumental in the development of out-patient anaesthesia in Edmonton, particularly as it related to oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Ian was Chief of Anaesthesia at the Charles Camsell Hospital from 1976 to 1978 but has returned to practice at the Royal Alexandra Hospital as well as at Kingsway Oral Surgery.
Beyond his profession, Ians interests tend towards the outdoors. He is a keen motorcyclist, horse rider, fly fisherman, and hiker. Recently he has taken up watercolor painting. Ian has been married to Nan for 41 years and they have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
