Background
Dr. Walter Dobrovolsky is a specialist in oral and maxillofacial surgery who has practiced in Edmonton with the group at Kingsway Oral Surgery since 1989. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Dentistry Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He is also cross appointed to the Department of Otolaryngology. His past academic involvement was as Assistant Professor in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Toronto from 1980 to 1983. He also taught in both the undergraduate and post-graduate oral and maxillofacial surgery programme at the University of Toronto until his departure for Edmonton in 1988.
His area of research was in TMJ surgery and in the development of a TMJ Total Joint Prosthesis. He has been involved with the modern dental implant since 1979 and had taught in may of the early implant courses in the 1980s to train surgeons in the use of the original Branemark implant system.
He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Dentists of Canada in oral and maxillofacial surgery and has been the Chief Examiner in oral and maxillofacial surgery for the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C.
He is presently Chief or Oral and Maxillofacial at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and also works at the University Hospital in conjunction with the Head and Neck Surgical Team and also at the Misercordia Hospital and the Stollery Childrens Hospital. He is the immediate past Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Based Dentistry in the Capital Region.
He has served as President of the OSOMS, ASOMS, CAOMS, Ontario Society of Dental Anaesthesiology, and the Alberta Society of dental Specialists. He has received the Distinguished Service Award from both the Ontario Dental Association and the Alberta Dental Association and College. He also received the Colonel Sam McLaughlin Award for Excellence in Oral Surgery upon graduation from his residency.
He has lectured extensively in Canada and the USA. He maintains a busy practice with an emphasis on TMJ reconstruction and surgery and dental implants.
